Updated: Sep 10, 2022
Looking to getaway? Great news, being located minutes from Ohope Beach, Whakatane, a short trip from Papamoa, Tauranga, Hamilton and Rotorua, we are a hop-step-and-jump away. Best of all there's so much to see and do: from bush walks; cycle trails; water sports; chartered fishing; to kayaking and more! Or checkout our local Cafes and Restaurants. There is something for everyone.
Best of all a lot of what can be seen and done is absolutely free to the public. Many gems like the Tauwhare Pa help us appreciate our beautiful landscape while learning local Maori history.
As you're heading out of Ohope, the Tauwhare Pa walkway provides an opportunity to appreciate local Maori history while enjoying beautiful views over the harbour to Ohakana Island, Port Ohope and the East Cape. Access to the walkway is approximately 300 metres on the left, past the start of Wainui Road, Ohope.
Established several hundred years ago, Tauwhare Pa was overlooks the western arm of Ohiwa Harbour. Two tribal territories - Ngati Awa in the west and Whakatohea in the east both needed access to the harbour. During its 200 or so years of occupation Tauwhare was fought over a number of times for its valuable resources.
